The “AGYAAT” Jungle

I always believed that a location in a film should be treated like a character. In the right context and rightly composed you will almost feel as if the location is alive and will have a recall value long after you have seen the film. A few examples that I can give is the Sarkar house and the Bhoot apartment. The house in which I shot Sarkar is now referred to as the Sarkar house by people in the industry. Many films have been shot at that location before and since but it comes to life only in Sarkar and that’s because of the context it’s been put into. I wanted to capture an emotional aspect of the feeling when we look at the house of a man towards whom we have awe in our hearts. So it’s really the feeling which is being captured with a combination of the composition, background score and its placement in the edit.

Similarly in Bhoot the apartment and its building became synonymous with Manjit the ghost. Repeatedly using the same angles and compositions in that apartment created an effect of a character coming in to the film again and again. Also by making the geography of the apartment very clear to the audience I created an effect of the viewer feeling that he himself is living there. The effect of the Bhoot apartment was to the extent that till today 6 years after its release I am told that nobody lives there and the owner of the apartment just uses that space to store some old furniture. Very few films give this much importance to locations and hence we rarely remember locations in films. The first time I felt this impact was in Alfred Hitchcock’s “Psycho”. The house in Psycho looks as sinister as the killer and this is not because of its architecture but because of the context in which it has been put into.

Coming to the jungle in which I shot “Agyaat”, I have seen personally quite a few jungles in India, like Ranthambore, Madumalai, Wynad and also in Malaysia and Bangkok not to mention countless other jungles on video ranging from Indonesia to Brazil.

But when I set my eyes on the Sigiriya jungle in Sri Lanka, it took my breath away with its sheer character. One might say a jungle is a jungle but then you have not seen the Sigiriya forest. It’s both enchanting and terrifying at the same time. Every tree of it looks like it’s got a story to it and hiding something beneath it just waiting to pounce on you. For the subject matter of “Agyaat” which is about a set of people trapped in a jungle and something out there killing them one by one I couldn’t even have dreamt of finding a location anywhere as incredible as Sigiriya, especially since I had no intention of showing the entity which is creating the terror. It is imperative that the jungle substitutes for the entity which is killing them. As a director I have never been more thrilled on a location shoot than in Agyaat and that is thanks to the Sigiriya jungle.

I am putting some stills from the film here and also some video footage just to give you an idea of how frighteningly sexy the Sigiriya Black Jungle looks.

My dear Ramu, After a long time i am writing a comment here. Good trailor and \’not bad\’ promotion for "Aagyat".But i want to ask you a few doubt which might help me in my future life. I really need help from a "real guru"………These are my doubts1. Are you not afraid of writing so frankly about women as woman is torture and sex is pleasure in this age where Channel Journos fighting to kill men and their domination..?2. Are you not afraid of CNN ibn,NDTV,Times of india who now is fighting a war for freedom of rich women to drink \’bloody martini"..?You are writing so frankly about your selfishness, sexual relationship with women and even you stated passively that you love the body of a woman ,not her[ the whole personality].I really appreacite this courage but are you not scared..?. News channels now shout and scream that being a man is a big sin. They go like " Oh you are man..rite…But you can solve that problem by being a slave to a highly egoistic, brainless, high attitude having pop culture girl, After all you also have to live.."3.There is a possiblity for these channels taking a step against you as they might say you are initiating sexual violence against women..etc etc craps….Are you not afraid of these kind of games they play ? God[or nature or whatever] has given man a masculine nature and In sex man takes a active and leadership stand and majority of women loves being dominated by man ,that time. Is this a sin..? AYn rand and Nathaniel branden says Man should have highest care for himself and his highest moral purpose is his own happiness. Objectivist ethics says, \’A man must do things for his own beneficiary, not for any other\’s". Can\’t a man Live for himself..?I think in this Age where a few ghoses control india, It\’s very difficult to have an orgasm without any guilty feeling and it\’s very difficult to follow AYN Rand\’s Philosophy, here .When you are doing natural things[in sex] for your happiness you ll be thinking like "Am i doing a sin..? Am I not respecting women…? Am I hurting that innocent angel who is screaming like a tiger as she want \’more and more"…?Oh…God these journos and their psuedo philosophy are really screwing innocent men.[ Cruel men always have lived happily and they will be…]…..I need a real advice[or gyan or whatever] on this topic…It\’s not any fun stuff but am asking damn seriously and life became a real mess by feeling guilty all the time[ even for fancying a wild sex with this "angel" girl who need to be respected]….with love…..vaishak…

Nice pic and Nice to see a telugu hero.. and hoping u work with more telugu talents…

  4. Sai says:

You definitely manage to create an interest in the jungle and the film but then looking at the photos of Nitin and Nisha Kothari…Nitin hasn\’t managed to impress as an actor so far in his Telugu films. Let\’s hope you were able to extract a performance from him and that he has learned to control his hands (unlikely to have happened unless you made him).Nisha Kothari has been associated with so many bad films and consequently, bad memories. So, even if I don\’t mind her, psychologically it just brings the expectation/interest down a bit.Just my immediate reaction to your post.

"I always believed that a location in a film should be treated like a character"Thats why characters are treated like locations "In the right context and rightly composed you will almost feel as if the location is alive and will have a recall value long after you have seen the film." Again true. Locations are the only recall value in your films."The house in which I shot Sarkar is now referred to as the Sarkar house by people in the industry." Good thing you did not name the movie "Slaughter""In Bhoot the apartment and its building became synonymous with Manjit the ghost." Thats only because the ghost herself was sexy. IT would not have been so if the ghost was, lets say, Reema Lagoo"Repeatedly using the same angles and compositions in that apartment created an effect of a character coming in to the film again and again." What an excuse to be lazy"By making the geography of the apartment very clear to the audience I created an effect of the viewer feeling that he himself is living there."Now why dont porn movie makers do that! "The effect of the Bhoot apartment was to the extent that till today 6 years after its release I am told that nobody lives there and the owner of the apartment just uses that space to store some old furniture." You should have made a movie on furniture. Then the owner would have used it to store ghosts."But when I set my eyes on the Sigiriya jungle in Sri Lanka, it took my breath away with its sheer character." Translation: I could spot lot of make-out places

That tandoori legs pic is awesome. Plus that look given to Ravi Kale (Chander in Sarkar) is awesome too! The leather bandi and bandana just gives him a local goon\’s look. What a tranformation! In Jungle(the movie), the Borivali National Park scenes were amazing. THe other jungle you shot in was just too dense. Sigiriya looks fantastic. What happened to these guys-Vaishak Nambiar adn "Truth Hurts" (Look at their comments)

Truly, you are the baap of bollywood

  9. mikey says:

As u beleive in theory of objectivity,u ridicule the concept of GOD/RELIGION.i beleive god and evil are abstarct entities. If u question the very existence of god/religion and rationality behind its arguments,How could it be possible that u made hellua lot of horror movies which defy logic(THE GHOST CONCEPTS IN DEYYAM/RATHRI and other hellua lotta movies u produced in factory).how far would you justify this?when u didnt beleive in god,why can not it be that u ridicule the evil/ghost?do u want to manipulate the fear of audiences to your advantage? OR is it that As a film maker u are always fascinated with the conflict/intrigues of a plot irrespective of your personal views on it?

  10. mikey says:

secondly in what areas did u evolve as a film maker since your first movie shiva?

  11. Movie says:

Used to be a big fan of your movies – Rangeela, Satya, Jungle, Company, Darna Zaroori Hain, Darling, Bhoot.I am a big fan of the earlier Amitabh also – the Amitabh in Zanjeer, Sholay, Shakti etc – he really was the one. But I can\’t stand him in his current avatar where is overacts – though he doesn\’t overract as much in your movies. But I still can\’t stand him anymore – this is from a guy who has seen Sholay 20 times, Don-Shakti-10 times etc. And I can\’t stand your obsession with him & his parivar. Maybe if you had shot your movies earlier, you would have also had Teji & Harivansh Rai Bachchan in your movies? Also your wierd camera angles in recent movies! I get a headache. Compare your camera angles in Satya with those in Sarkar Raj – your camera work has changed radically – and not for the better in my opinion.I know you won\’t take this seriously, but please get back to your Satya, Company kind of work.

  12. Dev says:

The first look reminds me of "Lost" and did wipe up an appetite for the movie. If I remember correctly Drohi (Antham) was also shot in Srilanka. I am interested to know the process of identifying locations. Do write about it when you get a chance. After watching the video that you have uploaded, the next video it suggested was the Botony Song from Shiva, which I watched with some nostalgia. Remembered that the college location in Shiva was Keys High School in Secunderabad!

    Why should we watch Agyaat?

  18. Pradeep says:

  19. Pradeep says:

Ramu why nisha again?cant u get any other new gal??we r get bored of her.. aren\’t u?

  20. Arun says:

RGV might have taken Nisha on basis of what he gave her in Aag and her performance. Here too he must have judged her on what she could do with her role .I hope you get my point. I will watch this movie with my girlfriends who love to get scared. And who love RGV too. 😉

  21. Arun says:

After seeing these snaps I fell these people are as common as normal-regular Andheri-Versova-Bnadra people. Did you get my point RGV ?

  22. Chris says:

Arre!Looks outstanding to me! Thanks very much for sharing the clip and the stills. I must say that I find the Sigiriya Jungle looks the most frighteningly sexy in stills (from top to bottom) #2, #4 (especially the left side of the shot!), #7, #19 and #23! ha!The location looks absolutely perfect and the cast has a very real film crew look about them. Bravo, Ramu-bhai!All the best with this one.Sincerely,Chris–Sierra Vista, Arizona, USA

  23. E says:

Hi RGV,The Sigiriya "character" is awesome. What with the costumes….they look crappy….But anyway..nothing to do with Agyaat but for your media project..i ventured upon finding a good book,Manufacturing Consent: The Political Economy of the Mass Media written by Noam Chomsky and Edward S. Herman…it is absolutely relevant to what your are intending to do with your media project…the wiki entry for this as below;;Presenting an analysis its authors call the "propaganda model," the book argues that since mass media news outlets are now run by large corporations, they are under the same competitive pressures as other corporations. According to the book, the pressure to create a stable, profitable business invariably distorts the kinds of news items reported, as well as the manner and emphasis in which they are reported. This occurs not as a result of conscious design but simply as a consequence of market selection: those businesses who happen to favor profits over news quality survive, while those that present a more accurate picture of the world tend to become marginalized. The book further points out issues with the dependency of mass media news outlets upon major sources of news, particularly the government. If a particular outlet is in disfavor with a government, it can be subtly \’shut out\’, and other outlets given preferential treatment. Since this results in a loss in news leadership, it can also result in a loss of readership/viewership. That can itself result in a loss of advertising revenue, which is the primary income for most of the mass media (newspapers, magazines, television). To minimize the possibilities of lost revenue, therefore, outlets will tend to report news in a tone more favorable to government and business, and giving unfavorable news about government and business less emphasisthere also seem to be some documentary film based on this book titled , " Manufacturing Consent: Noam Chomsky and the Media".take a look if you have some time….or if your movie still in the research phase…and the principal photography is not yet started….CheersEV

Ramu,The pix u posted are very interesting. I shall watch this movie. I think u had a liking for the muscular knives;) Nitin looks diff. Since ur screenplay & photography are the heroes the movie then it shud work well.As for the video here, the music score dominates the Director\’s narration. I watched the HW movies in the last 4-5 years, esp the horror movies. Eeriness scares the ppl the most. Agyaat music tries to make it looks like any other movie. I remember Tarzan the Ape Man (Bo Derek) scenes. They too made it in Sri Lanka. It loked like a real Eden with low hanging fruit trees, plants, clear water streams and sandy beaches…..real visual treat.I trust as a director & hope the movie looks better than these pix and utube video. Best of Luck.Rgds,

Hi RamA friend of mine watched Shiva (Nag-Amala) starrer about 40 times – not to see Nag pluck the chain from a bicycle or the way violence was shown differently. She saw it for ‘Botany paata…’ ‘Sarasalu Chalu…’ and other songs and the love between Nag and Amala. You must have heard of Ninne Pellladuta of Krishna Vamsi – a block-buster movie, I got terribly bored and even irritated at the noisy interactions among the members of Nag’s family and those of his neighbours’, Heavens! It was heights of nonsense! But it did so well because of the romance between Nag and Tabu. I am not suggesting (as if you take suggestions), that you make crap like that but mischief and romance in a movie do play a wonderful role in getting repeat audience. Even your box office failures have scenes which are cute – for instance Sanjay mimicking a tiger after he and Urmila fight and part in Daud -it was so cute! With lovely songs and the beautiful locations in the forest, Daud would have done really well, if it didn’t have Chako’s long boring comedy. I keep wondering why Daud didn’t do well; maybe, it lacked suspense to keep the audience engrossed. When you can portray emotions like fear, anger and pride (power) so well in characters, why don’t you portray emotions like romance and love with the same intensity, degree and proportion? Remember? You once said that you love to watch some scenes of movies again and again, if you show passionate expression of romance and love it will haunt the audience and they tend to watch the movie again and again. I am waiting for a beautiful romantic movie from your house please! – Take some good-looking people – NOT JD CHAKRAVARTHY pleeeeeeease! I can’t stand him on screen and how can a sensible person like you have such a long association with him!!!!!?? Really strange!
